Hook head lighthouse, Ireland

On the other side of the estuary opposite Dunmore East lies the Hook Head peninsula, in County Wexford. The Hook Lighthouse is clearly visible from Dunmore East and is only a short trip by car via the Passage East Car Ferry.

William Marshall, Earl of Pembrokeshire in the early thirteenth century undertook the building of the lighthouse as a navigational aid to guide his ships into Waterford Harbour. It is a unique example of an almost intact medieval lighthouse, and was a major feat at the time of its construction. Purpose built as a lighthouse, it has served sailors and shipping for 800 years, apart from a short closure during the seventeenth century.

It is thought to be one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. When the Tower of Hook became fully automated in 1996 and no longer needed resident keepers, it was decided to celebrate its uniqueness by opening it to the public. There are guided tours of the Lighthouse.

The view from the Tower of Hook embraces the Saltee Islands to the east, and Brownstown Head to the west. In the distance the peaks of the Comeragh and Blackstairs Mountains can be seen.

Check out www.prehistoricwaterford.com

The county of Waterford, located in the south-east of Ireland is rich in ancient Megalithic monuments. The sites dotted around the country, listed are thousands of years old, going back to the Neolithic period (4500-2500 BC) and stand as testaments to our forefathers way of life, their customs and beliefs and their quest for knowledge.

From a distant age of spirits and gods these people bestowed upon us these wonderful lasting reminders of a past society who sought to understand the eternal mysteries of life on earth and the hereafter.

http://www.prehistoricwaterford.com/ offers a wealth of information to anybody who is interested in Megalithic monuments. As this site is very much a work in progress with still lots of sites to visit and photograph participation and feedback from visitors is very welcome by leaving comments or signing the Guestbook.

Standing Stones Documented at Comeragh Hostel

Comeragh Hostel boasts its very own standing stones which are situated just 0.5 km from each other. Although each one is different from the other the one thing that might tie the three monuments together is that they form a rough line in a SW direction which possibly could be interpreted as being ancient route markings or boundary indicators. The three stones are all in separate fields which are the property of Comeragh Hostel, just stop by and we will gladly point you to where the stones are located.

This stone pictured here is a rectangular shaped edge stone that stands in a field with a fine modern two story home, and like the stone pictured above is clearly visible from the road. Its just 1 metre high and 0.5 metre wide.

The stone pictured here is a rough surfaced conglomerate, crescent shaped with dimensions that are more like those of a portal tomb orthostat. It stands 1.25 metres tall but is almost 2 metre wide and 0.5 metres in thickness. It is not visible from the road but is just two fields behind the house mentioned above and is easy accessed by a gate at the rear of the building.

The infomation & pictures are the property of and were sourced by www.prehistoricwaterford.com
